" Wisdom is Supreme—So, Get Wisdom "

I’ve been reading through the Bible again this year with some friends and we’ve now landed in Proverbs.  Solomon, who authored many of the proverbs we find in the Bible, was known to be the wisest man of all time.  He did not attain wisdom on his own—it was a gift from God.

God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.  Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone else…And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations.” 1 Kings 4:29-31 NIV [emphasis added]

Solomon’s wisdom brought him great fame, so much so that we are still talking about it today.  What is wisdom and why is it so important?  Of course, we can easily look up the dictionary definition of wisdom; however, wisdom is basically how we should live in God’s world.  Wisdom is not so much about cracking life’s success code as it is about searching for God’s wisdom so we can know Him, what pleases Him, and how to apply that wisdom to our everyday lives.

Where should we start?  Well, you probably already know what my answer is…God’s Word is always the best place to start.

The Book of Proverbs is largely written by the wisest man in the world (Solomon), who was an author and collector of many wise sayings.  In the collection of wise sayings in Proverbs, we learn about blessings and curses; the way of wisdom; what God hates; what God loves; however, its constant theme is the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom.  This is not a fear as in we should be afraid of God, but it is a holy reverence.  This holy reverence connects us with the One who holds all wisdom.

“To the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.” Romans 16:27 NIV

We can gain knowledge from education and life experiences, but True Wisdom comes from God.  “Wisdom is supreme—so get wisdom.”  Proverbs 4:7 CSB

PRAYER:  Dear Father, please help me to never abandon wisdom.  Help me to search it out, cherish it, and to embrace it.  Let wisdom be a garland of favor and crown of beauty on my head.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen
