Devotionals for Wednesday: April 19

Introduction

As we study the Gospel, we pray for, anticipate, and expect spiritual growth in our lives. To facilitate this spiritual growth, we will use two components. One component is the commitment to attend the Wednesday Bible study from 7 pm-8:15 pm, either on campus in the Worship Center or via Livestream at www.bethelhampton.com. The second component is a set of weekly devotionals that we complete prior to the Wednesday Bible study.

The questions listed below are for you to answer and reflect upon as you study the chapter for this week. We suggest that you take at least four or five days each week for this personal devotional.

A Study of Jesus’ Superiority

Book of Hebrews Chapter 13

Chapter 13 would be considered the conclusion of the epistle (letter). This is the part of the letter where the writer sums up what they wish to say to the reader. The writer may include some incidental or chance remarks at this point.

Day 1 – Hebrews 13:1-6

1. In the midst of what is occurring the writer wants what to continue?

2. During this time of persecution, the Hebrews (and today’s readers) are encouraged by verse 2 to do what and for what reason?

3. What is the message that verse 3 holds for all the readers of Hebrews.

4. What does verse 4 bring to the readers’ attention?

5. What in verses 5 and 6 provides man with a stronghold against covetousness?

Day 2 – Hebrews 13:7-12

1. What things are the recipients of the epistle (letter) encouraged to remember about their spiritual leaders?

2. What does verse 8 reveal to the readers will enable them to stand in their time of testing?

3. What instruction does verse 9 provide to its readers in regard to what they should not do?

4. Verse 9 illuminated for us that our hearts are strengthened by what and not by what?

5. Animals offered as sin offerings were burned where and what was this symbolic of?

Day 3 – Hebrews 13:13-17

1. In day 2 of our devotional we recognized that Jesus suffered outside the gate and we understand what that means. Verse 13 calls us to be willing to go to Jesus outside that gate; what does that mean?

2. What does verse 14 suggest that we will find outside the gate?

3. Verse 15 encourages us to once again offer continuous sacrifices but of what nature are these sacrifices?

4. Verse 16 speaks of additional gifts that please God but to whom are they given?

Day 4 – Hebrews 13:18-25

1. Why do we have an exhortation to obey and submit to the spiritual leaders?

2. These spiritual leaders are not simply employed in these positions; verse 17 says they must do what?

3. A prayer that we should pray for ourselves and each other is that God would do what? (verse 21)

4. What are we being asked to do in verse 22?
