Devotionals for Wednesday: March 22
Introduction
As we study the Gospel, we pray for, anticipate, and expect spiritual growth in our lives. To facilitate this spiritual growth, we will use two components. One component is the commitment to attend the Wednesday Bible study from 7 pm-8:15 pm, either on campus in the Worship Center or via Livestream at www.bethelhampton.com. The second component is a set of weekly devotionals that we complete prior to the Wednesday Bible study.
The questions listed below are for you to answer and reflect upon as you study the chapter for this week. We suggest that you take at least four or five days each week for this personal devotional.
A Study of Jesus’ Superiority
Book of Hebrews Chapter 9
Day 1 – Hebrews 9:1-5
Hebrews 9:1 indicates that the first covenant had ordinances that governed the services in the earthly sanctuary; let’s take a glimpse at some of these.
Name the three items mentioned in verse 2 that were to be placed in the first part of the sanctuary?
The term showbread (also spelled shewbread) means “bread of face” in Hebrew.
If you consider the meaning of showbread given above and the ordinance given in Exodus 25:30, what do you see about this offering?
According to Leviticus 24:5-9, how many loaves of bread were kept on the table of showbread and where did they come from?
Within the tabernacle a second veil exist, known as what? (verse 3)
According to verse 4, what was kept in the part of the tabernacle behind the second veil?
Day 2 - Hebrews 9:6-10
When all the furniture of the tabernacle had been completed, the priests were restricted to entering what part of the tabernacle to perform their duties (verse 6)
Who had access to the second part of the tabernacle known as the Holy of Holies and under what conditions could he enter this part of the tabernacle? (verse 7)
Verse 8 indicates that the way to obtaining access to the Holy of Holies will remain unknown as long as what is true?
The present system at that time of offering gifts and sacrifices had one major flaw, what was that? (verses 9, 10)
Day 3 – Hebrews 9:11-15
Christ has come as the High Priest of a superior tabernacle not made with the hands.
According to verse 12, what gift/sacrifice did Christ offer that gained Him access, once and for all, to the Most Holy Place?
The animal sacrifices, ashes of a heifer made man clean, so what did Jesus have to offer? (verse 14)
How was what Jesus did superior to what the Levitical priest did? (verse 14)
What qualifies Jesus to be the Mediator of the new covenant? (verse 15)
What did Jesus’ death obtain for us? (verse 15)
Day 4 – Hebrews 9:16-28
The word “testament” is the same as the Greek word which is translated covenant. The writer of Hebrews gives his readers a lesson in the law.
For a testament or covenant to be validated what must occur? (verse 16)
The first covenant was dedicated how? (verse 19)
According to the law, what benefit comes from the shedding of blood? (verse 22)
The writer of Hebrews indicated that it was appropriate that the copies or shadows of that which is in the heavens be purified with the blood of animal sacrifices, but the true heavenly things require a superior offering.
How has Jesus appeared before God to put away sin? (verse 26)
