Devotionals for Wednesday: March 15

Introduction

As we study the Gospel, we pray for, anticipate, and expect spiritual growth in our lives. To facilitate this spiritual growth, we will use two components. One component is the commitment to attend the Wednesday Bible study from 7 pm-8:15 pm, either on campus in the Worship Center or via Livestream at www.bethelhampton.com. The second component is a set of weekly devotionals that we complete prior to the Wednesday Bible study.

The questions listed below are for you to answer and reflect upon as you study the chapter for this week. We suggest that you take at least four or five days each week for this personal devotional.

A Study of Jesus’ Superiority

Book of Hebrews Chapter 8

Day 1 – Hebrews 8:1-2

1.      Hebrews 7:25-27 describes for the reader the type of high priest that was fitting for mankind; what type of person was that?

2.      What is the main idea that the writer of Hebrews is attempting to drive home to his Hebrew readers? (chapter 8 verses 1 and 2)

3.      Jesus is the Minister of the sanctuary and tabernacle according to verse 2; but how does the tabernacle in which He ministers differ from others mentioned in the Bible?

Day 2 – Hebrews 8:3-6

1.      Is it true that Jesus needed to offer gifts and sacrifices as did the high priest on earth? (verse 3)

2.      The writer of Hebrews stated in verse 4 that “if Jesus were on earth, He would not be a priest.” Why not?

3.      Verse 5 indicates that there are priests that “serve the copy or shadow of heavenly things;” what do they mean by this statement?

4.      Moses’ building of the tabernacle was used in verse 5 to illustrate what point?

5.      Jesus’ superiority in ministry is established in what way? (verse 6)

Day 3 - Hebrews 8:7-13

1.      Hebrews 8:8-12 makes it clear that the new covenant under Jesus Christ is a fulfillment of the prophecy in Jeremiah 31:31-34.  Read this prophecy in Jeremiah 31:31-34 and compare with Hebrews 8:8-12.

2.      Exodus 19:5 made a reference to a covenant (the Old Covenant) made by God to His people, Israel; why was there a need for another covenant? (verse 8)

3.      The first covenant was written on tablets of stone; how does the new covenant differ? (verse 10)

4.      What did the Lord do to make Himself known by His people? (verse 12)
