You Have A Tribe—You Just Have To Find It.

There is an African proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”  In fostering the true essence of sisterhood (or brotherhood) relationships, there has to be an investment of time and effort.  Greater (and far reaching) impact can be made individually and collectively when you are able to find your tribe.

There is importance in finding your tribe because quite frankly, we are stronger in resisting the evil one when we are not alone.  We find a great example of this in 2 Timothy 2:22, “Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”  Timothy was a part of Paul’s tribe and because they had established a solid relationship, Paul had earned the privilege of speaking into Timothy’s life to hold him accountable.  Paul warned his friend about youthful lusts—maybe not because Timothy was overtly doing anything wrong, but because Paul cared about him and wanted him to be successful in his spiritual journey.

Those in your tribe want what’s best for you.  Your tribe won’t let you walk off the cliff without warning that you’re too close to the edge.  Your tribe will love and support you through tough times.  They will celebrate with you in good times.

Notice that the verse in 2 Timothy 2:22 says “along with” – that’s your tribe!  One way to identify your tribe is to surround yourself with individuals who pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace with a pure heart.  The more we pursue the heart of Christ, the further we will find ourselves removed from evil.  Finding your tribe takes effort.  Sometimes it means stepping outside of your comfort zone.  God did not intend for us to go through life alone, so put yourself out there.  Don’t focus on the bad that could happen, think about the reward that awaits you when you connect with your tribe.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”  Proverbs 27:17

Prayer:  Dear Father, I believe that you don’t want me to journey through life alone.  Please give me the courage to step beyond the familiar and help me to connect with my tribe. In Jesus name.  Amen.
