Mothers, Pray for Your Daughters!

Considering the state of the world today, I am convinced we’re living in a time when daughters need their mother’s prayers more than ever. Our daughters are being bombarded with the world’s definition of beauty which is primarily negative, unwholesome media. Some have gleefully wrapped themselves in the accoutrements of a culture designed to obscure their vision of the biblical beautiful woman God has called them to be. Others have simply--perhaps unwittingly--followed the proverbial “pied piper.”

We are currently losing many of our daughters to a culture that pushes, pulls and manipulates them into embracing inappropriate titles and behaviors. They clothe themselves in garments that conform to a worldly standard of beauty. However, God has not called any of his daughters to be sexy divas or hotties. Rather, scripture tells us his daughters are clothed in strength and dignity. (Proverbs 31:25)

Praying over our daughters is our responsibility and an enduring demonstration of love for them. In a world full of distractions, as well as seen and unseen dangers, it can feel overwhelming to pray for our daughters when there is so much to pray about. But as mothers, we must commit to praying for our daughters daily. It is good practice to use scripture when you pray because it reduces anxiety and also because Jesus prayed scripture.

Several things we might pray daily regarding our daughters include:

  • Protection (Monday)

  • Mental stability (Tuesday)

  • Relationship with God (Wednesday)

  • Wisdom and discernment (Thursday)

  • Emotional and spiritual development (Friday)

  • Overall health and well-being (Saturday)

  • Children, friends, influences and relationship with husbands (Sunday)

Additionally, if your daughter is married, pray for her husband individually and for them as a couple.

No matter how young or old, mothers need to be praying for their daughters. It is our spiritual duty to exert more influence over our daughters than the world. Scripture instructs us to raise our children in the way they should go and assures us that even if they stray, they will return to those foundational teachings.

With so much going on in the world, we may not be able to protect them from everything, but we can keep them lifted in prayer to a Sovereign Savior who is with them wherever they go. Remember, it is the prayers of the righteous that avail much, so let us be faithful to pray for our daughters every day with faith that they will become strong, confident, virtuous women of God whose children and husband rise up and call them blessed. (Proverbs 31:28)

Prayer: Lord, I pray that our prayers will have more impact and influence on our daughters than we can imagine. May our daughters not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of their minds; that they will walk in the narrow way, drawing ever closer to you, by the power of the Holy Spirit that dwells in them. Amen.
