One of the Greatest Gifts You Can Give is Encouragement

Encouragers are a gift to the body of Christ.  In fact, encouragement is referred to as one of the motivational gifts of the Holy Spirit.

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”  Romans 12:6-8 NIV

It seems to me that God is pretty intentional about giving gifts to His children, and how those gifts should be used.  We each have a gift (or gifts), and the purpose for whatever gift you have is for the common good of the whole.

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 NLT

A great encourager in the Bible was Barnabas.  He was described as a good man who was full of joy, full of the Holy Spirit, and full of faith.

“News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.” Acts 11:22-24 NIV

Even though Barnabas was known for his encouraging spirit, he didn’t use his gift to bring attention to himself.  He used his gift to bless others and to bring glory to God.  Can we all take a lesson from our friend, Barnabas?  If you possess the wonderful gift of encouragement, how are you using it?  Are you using it?

People are going through it.  Don’t let social media fool you.  People are posting happy smiles one day, and entertaining suicidal thoughts the next.  An encouraging word may just be what someone needs to make the difference in their day or even their life.  Just say it!

Prayer:  Dear Father, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.  Help me to use my words to encourage someone today. In Jesus name.  Amen.
